From archives to posters: exploring and extending Stanley Kubrick’s work

The objective of the workshop-laboratory is to explore, manipulate and creatively extend several archive collections through an original and international collaboration. The collection of 20th century posters at La Contemporaine, the film archives at La Cinémathèque and the personal and professional archives of Stanley Kubrick at the University of Arts London will be used. We wish to carry out a collective and creative reflection on artistic and social criticism, on conservation awareness in the digital age and on graphic creation as a symbolic means of communication. First, we question the medium of the poster, its creation and dissemination means, and its artistic-political implication in a global context. Second, we develop a fine analysis of the life and work of Stanley Kubrick through the exploration of archives housed at the Cinémathèque and the University of Arts in London.

This immersive module takes place in two stages, in Paris and then in London, and leads to a creative output in the form of graphic and textual documents. These creations are then presented in an exhibition.

Materials studied

• Archives of La Contemporaine: photographs, text documents and posters from the First World War and the Vietnam War. Parallel with the films Les Sentiers de la Gloire (1957) and Full Metal Jacket (1987).
• Archives of La Cinémathèque: books and magazines, film reviews, photos of filming, photos of the set, promotional photos, film posters, epistolary correspondence.
• Stanley Kubrick Archive (LCC): various personal objects and working documents belonging to Stanley Kubrick.
• British Film Institute documents accessed at the library and the mediatheque

Type of deliverables

The expected output is twofold. The students must propose a poster that echoes the reflections that have taken place over the two three days. Alongside the poster, they are asked to produce an argument that explains the reflective work undertaken, the results, etc., in both languages. They then have a creative carte blanche which can take any format they wish and must extend the themes addressed in Stanley Kubrick’s films.

Methodology

The aim is to immerse students in the cinematographic work of Stanley Kubrick and to manipulate archives related to the issues underlying his films (photos, texts, posters, correspondence, publications etc.). The students will then produce a creative output.

Expected results

The research must lead the students to propose an original creation that extends their reflections during the six days. This takes the form of a poster extending one of Kubrick’s films and a free creative output, taking the form of their choice. The MIP emphasises the Franco-British aspect, so the reports must be accompanied by written productions in English and French.
